Rob Pennell
Role: Chief Pilot Joined: 1999
Rob had his first flying lesson in a fixed wing aeroplane in 1989, aged 17. After leaving school he spent 6 months raising funds for the RAF’s 50th Anniversary Battle of Britain Appeal and a further 6 months as a farm hand in New Zealand prior to joining the Military. Rob was injured in a road traffic accident putting an immediate stop to his plans of becoming an Army Helicopter Pilot.
Following 2 years of convalescence, Rob was able to fly again and went on to gain a ‘frozen’ ATPL(H). Soon after, Rob secured his first job as a professional pilot with Yorkshire Helicopters. This was followed by several years employed as a line pilot for Bond Offshore Helicopters flying in support of the North Sea oil and gas industry. Here he gained invaluable experience and his instrument rating. In 1999 an opportunity to join London’s Air Ambulance presented itself and Rob jumped at the chance and has been with London’s Air Ambulance ever since, the last 5 years in the role of Chief Pilot. He has in excess of 5,000 flying hours (4500 multi engine).
